Kickin' it in Cabo: Review of Hilton Los Cabos

I hope you enjoyed the update on the airing of my grievances. Let's move on to the real deal on our trip to Cabo. I'll start off with our stay at Hilton Los Cabos.

This is really the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed at (and it helped that we used our rewards points). The lobby is airy and open. A big fountain marks the center of the lobby square. The rooms are spacious and well decorated. The hotel is a mix of the traditional Hilton elegance with a modern Mexican flair.

The Hilton Los Cabos will not disappoint. The staff is amazing! In every way this hotel is a 5 star resort, from the service to the accommodations. We even received a complimentary upgrade to an Ocean View suite upon check-in. Like seriously, I woke up to waves crashing on the beach every morning. That's the way to start any day, in my opinion.

The grounds are absolutely amazing. We spent most of our time lounging by the infinity pool, or on the beach. My pictures probably don't even do the place justice. It was pretty sweet. The food is TO DIE for also. You can sign me up for nachos and shrimp tacos by the pool any day. Oh, and frozen mojitos at noon every day? You can sign me up for those too.

Hilton Los Cabos gets the EE (Expedition Evans, of course) stamp of approval. If I ever visit Cabo again, this is the first place I will look to stay. I was very impressed with the service and the hotel in general. I'll let the pics speak for themselves:

My Airing of Grievances, Part Deux

So remember how I aired my grievances to United/Continental? Well, they did hear me. Just not as loud as I had hoped. It was wishful thinking that I would score some free vouchers or points or SOMETHING for my travel troubles. Alas, alls I got was a short, albeit polite email from Cindie (yes, with an "ie", pretentious much?), stating "we never want to disrupt your travel plans, however despite our best preparations, flight disruptions are sometimes unavoidable." Umm duh, didn't I say that in my original email and blog post? She seriously needs to read my blog. She did acknowledge the slipshod customer service though, so I guess she got the point in the end.

On the flip side of the coin, I pointed out a mistake Hilton made on my reservation, and they awarded me with a nice amount of bonus points for pointing out their error. Once again, you rock Hilton!

The Airing of Grievances

Holla back 2012! This will be my first post since 2011. OK, I know, it's almost February. What can I say, I've been mad busy, yo! I just winged my way back from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico just a few days ago. If anyone is thinking of going there, it's awesome. I've never wanted to stay somewhere so badly in my life.

I have so many fun posts lined up, but I'm going to switch it up and start with the bad. I love traveling, but I hate getting to wherever I'm visiting. I guess you could say I'm not a fan of the transport. Airfare prices are so high these days, and to get from Point A to Point B ain't so easy. This is my story of my flight home from Cabo - or, as I like to call it, the airing of my grievances to Continental/United Airlines.

After bidding farewell to our travel buddies (yes, there were tears), the attendant checking us in told us that our flight was 2 hours delayed due to weather. I checked the Continental website several times before leaving and not once did it reflect the change in time for the flight. When I said that to the attendant, he simply shrugged and stated "you should have called." Bad move. That could have been two hours of extra pool time. We were now 5 hours early for our 5 hour flight.

After a very long and drawn out lunch (in a Mexican airport mind you), perusal of every gift shop, and a stop by the Duty-Free, our plane finally arrived. I'll spare you the details of my whining and disgruntled-ness. It was bad. By time time economy class passengers started to board (after Business and Elite customers had boarded), the airline staff had completely given up. It was a free for all. I was hit in the head by a passenger who was fighting to put his bag in the overhead bin. I thought people were going to go crazy.

After settling in we learn that due to FAA union regulations, the flight attendants (who were the most unhelpful flight attendants I have ever met) might have to be put up in a hotel due to their working over 16 hours. A very nervous flight attendant got on the PA system and stated "we are crunching the numbers to see if we can even get this flight off the ground tonight for you customers". Seriously? Did you even go to flight attendant school? Talk about causing mass hysteria. I was about to pop open my travel size Patrón shooter.

After said "numbers were crunched", we were able to take off around 9:00pm EST time, arriving to our destination roughly 1:00am. We were home at 4:00am. Ridiculousness. We left 3.5 hours after our intended time. I understand weather happens and there can be delays, but the Continental/United staff was in no way accommodating to their guests. It's not our fault the plane arrived late. At least they waived the fee on the DirectTV.

Best believe they got a complaint letter! Don't they know I write a really influential travel blog? :)

Out With the Old and In With the New

Wow! The last Friday of 2011. I feel like this year flew by. Someone once told me that after I graduated high school, each year would go by faster and faster. Even though I'm totally #readyfor2012, I couldn't let my previous post be the last post of 2011. I wanted to take some time to pay homage to the year we are all moving on from.

Although in some ways it was a stressful year comprised of all the "usual" suspects (i.e. personal, health, and other random worries), I've seen and done a lot of things. More than I ever imagined. At the end of each year I like to think of what I was doing last year at this time. At the end of 2010, I had just started blogging, and quickly fell in love with writing and sharing my thoughts with others.

In 2011 I have been blessed with being able to see such beautiful cities as San Francisco/Bay Area and London. London is my new favorite city BTW. I experienced the Irish Countryside in a way I never dreamed of. I witnessed Stone Hedge, Buckingham Palace, and took Bud to Disneyland for the first time. I met Rob Kardashian and ate the most amazing donuts in Los Angeles. Might I remind you that I don't even like donuts.

As each year goes by I try to document more and more. Finally, a new digital camera for me in 2011! One lifetime is clearly not enough. I want to share my memories with friends and family forever. If this blog gives me a creative outlet to do that, then so be it!

Lastly, I'd like to thank you all for reading and taking interest in what I have to say this year. I hope that 2012 brings as much Expedition Evans "awesomeness" as 2011 did.

B&B Breakdown

Is anyone else #readyfor2012? Sorry, I love hashtags! Anyway - I rounded out the end of 2011 with a nice quick PA getaway. You know, one of those "I-need-to-get-out-of-here-for-a-little-bit-before-I-go-insane" kind of trips. A few months ago Groupon Getaways had an offer for a B&B in Lancaster County, PA - near Hersey Park but near-er to Amish Country. I later renamed it "Schrute Farms". A bunch of our friends were going and they kindly extended the invite, and you know I'm always up for a trip.

This was me and Bud's first time staying at a B&B. I'm not sure what I really expected - when I think of B&B I generally think of old Victorian houses, with a porch swing, and, I don't know - lots of quilts - and for some reason teddy bears? Something kinda like this:

Upon arriving we met the Inn Keeper (you know, Master of the House? Keeper of the Inn? Am I the only one that finds that amusing?), who was just as bizarre as the rest of the experience.

The accommodations were quaint, but there were random clown figurines and paintings everywhere, and it was creepy. There were even clown figurines in the bathroom and I felt like they were staring at me. I can just picture a black and white Rod Serling standing in the lobby with his hands folded saying something like "they checked in but they never checked out".

The rooms were decently clean, albeit a bit dusty and cluttered, but the accommodations allowed me to sleep a restful night's sleep at least. Our bathroom towels looked like 1500 different people had used them. On one of them I found long grey hairs stuck to it that were not mine or Bud's (after I had dried my face with it) <insert gag reflex here>. I'm gagging just thinking of it.

Then at 5:00 am we get a knock from one of our friends - there's a gas leak and we all need to get out of our rooms.We grab our valuables and head down to the lobby. Our friends smelled the leak, and I'm sure if they wrote this portion of the post it would be much more entertaining, but sorry, you just got my side of the story folks! As we were gathered in the lobby, the local firemen, which consisted of 3 overweight middle aged men and a 12 year old, arrived and cleared the building. Now, where was the Inn Keeper during all this? Your guess is as good as mine, because after calling and practically banging down her door, she was nowhere to be found. We were able to go back up to bed around 6:00 am.

She greeted us the next morning with "Did you all sleep well?" - to which we all muttered something under our breaths and told her the night's adventures. She immediately gave us some attitude and shrugged it off. I think I can say that all of us were thoroughly annoyed from that point on.

Don't get me wrong - we had a great time. We loved every minute with our friends. Their company made the experience much better. We shared lots of laughs and played fun games (Monopoly and the Paper Game)! We enjoyed an Amish Buggy ride (or as we like to call it, "Teach Me How to Buggy") and I got to buy some strawberry jam.

So, to sum up, it wasn't the worst place to stay, but not the best place to stay either. I guess it's true, if you are in good company, not much else matters. Shout to my friends that made the weekend wonderful!

Planning Pains

So I'm trying to plan a trip to Italy. I usually devise the plans for our vacays with much ease (I'm nerdy like that anyway) - but I'm having a really hard time planning this trip. We've figured out when we want to go - but necessarily where exactly - Italy is a big country, and it's not really that cheap to get there and get around in it. I'm trying to figure out logistically how to make all this work on the budget and time frame that we have.

There are a few package deals out there, but most are for Rome, Venice, and Florence city tours. These deals aren't bad deals, just not deals that match my budget and my liking. The Trip Advisor reviews on some of these tours leave a lot to be desired. I believe the words "flea infested hotel" was found in one of the reviews. A-no-thank-you.

So if there's anyone out there that can provide me with some suggestions of at least where to start, I greatly appreciate it!

What's the deal-io: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year - for deals that is

So I've been super excited the past few days. Why, you might ask? Four words my friends: Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Now I generally do not partake in the craziness that surrounds these two days. However this year, I could not resist. I picked up a pretty stylish Coach bag on Friday (and saved 25% to boot!). Yesterday I also enjoyed 50% of my entire order from New York and Company online store, and ordered a photo book highlighting our summer trip to Cali (free shipping!).

But what I absolutely love is that this year (more than every other year it seems), that travel websites have been also offering deals on Cyber Monday. Check out Travelocity and Travelzoo. They have discounted vacation packages. I also came across these deals from Jet Blue. The deals flying out of JFK are phenomenal! Most offers are expiring by tomorrow, so if you are looking to book, jump on it!

Some Advice

I really cannot believe how quickly 2012 is upon us! Fall seems to have apparently missed the Northeast and brought winter upon us immediately. That's OK though, winter means fun things like gingerbread lattes from Starbucks, really awesome shopping deals, and of course, new trips and travel deals for 2012! Does it sound like I'm wishing 2011 away to much?

Anyways, I wanted to take today's post and give a shout out to all those traveling out there this week. Kinda random, I know, but I'm a little off this week - 2.5 day work week and all. Sorry, rambling again.

I can only imagine what the airports are like the day before a major holiday. I've only traveled out of the country once during the Thanksgiving break. The only advice I can give, and I'm sure there are many other travel sites out there that recommend this - if you are going to travel, travel on Thanksgiving day itself.

My JFK airport experience was most pleasant. There was like 3 people total working, and we made it through security in about 5 minutes. Yes, 5 minutes - and we were flying internationally. Enough said my friends, enough said. So if there's anyone out there that's reading this - save some time and bucks and look into traveling on Thursday instead of Wednesday!

I heard on the news yesterday that the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is becoming the new Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so travel smart my dears! Oh, and my ultimate advice, avoid Disney this time of year at all costs. I'm not even brave enough to go during this time of year!

Oh, and shout out to Travelocity - they give frequent updates on flights and delays at all major airports. I'm a fan y'all!

What's the deal-io of the week: Western Bound

It's been awhile since one of these, right?!? I know how much you all of missed them.

I came across this little gem of a resort just last week. For any of you last minute travelers out there, these accommodations look like the perfect way to escape the Northern chill of November. You know how much I like to head out West every now and then.

The Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix boasts all types of activities from golfing to spa treatments. From the looks of the website, the grounds are beautiful - I would even go as far to say pristine. The resort is currently offering a Thanksgiving special of $99 per night!

I checked in with my travel buddy, Trip Advisor, and the guest reviews of the Arizona Grand are all extremely positive. What I also like about this hotel is that the general manager responds and thanks each guest that posted a review. Now that's the kind of service that Expedition Evans likes to see. Phoenix anyone?

The Most Delicious Donut You Will Ever Eat

Seriously, I'm not exaggerating. In wandering around California aimlessly (since wandering aimlessly is what we do best of course), we stumbled upon the mecca of all donut shops - Randy's Donuts. Randy's has been featured in a bunch of movies (most notably the Iron Man franchise), and is located right outside of LAX. It doesn't look like much, but believe me, the donuts are amazing - and I don't even like donuts. If you ever get a chance to go, try the chocolate raised - it's the JAM.

Happy Blog-versary!

Hello everyone! Yes, yes, it has been awhile. I'm not going to issue any excuses or apologize for my absence. It's my blog and I'll write if I want to - LOL. No totally kidding, I have missed typing away and regaling you all with my stories. The truth of the matter is, it's just been mad busy around here these days. You know, being an adult and stuff. I guess this plagues us all once in awhile.

This is a special post though, because I wanted to announce that this is my blog's one year anniversary! I remember on a rather cold (and boring) November afternoon, I decided to change things up and start writing about my travel experiences. For a non-writer by trade, I think I've done pretty good by my blog. This blog has given me an outlet that I would not normally have otherwise.

So as well as giving myself a "pat on the back", this post also serves as a "thank you" to my friends and fam that care enough to take a few minutes every now and then to check in with Expedition Evans.

Fall Back

So the Expedition Evans hacienda withstood its first hurricane. My immediate thoughts were "let's turn this into some kind of trip and evacuate" (I'm not gonna lie) - however my logical reasoning (and my bank account) got the best of me, and we decided to stick out the storm. Thankfully no serious damage except for some power outages affected us.

Not to get all profound on you, but in a way I think it really made the summer go out with a BANG (even though Labor Day is this weekend). Like an out with the old, in with the new kind of thing. Today the weather is a bit cooler, and I think everyone is ready to welcome a change of season. I know I am. I've had mixed feelings on summer ever since I graduated high school. Something about a 9am to 5pm schedule 50 weeks out of the year that makes me miss my school days.

So with September just a couple of days away, I welcome the season of pumpkins (and pumpkin spice lattes), bright fall colors, crisp fall days, CAMPING (stay tuned for that), and our 5 year wedding anniversary! Enjoy the last few days of summer everyone!!!

What's the deal-io: You wanna go where???

So my latest obsession is with French Polynesia (mostly because I just saw it on Keeping up with the Kardashians). Tahiti, Bora Bora - I will make it there some day. The biggest thing standing in my way though, is airfare. I was stunned to learn that an economy ticket to French Polynesia is at least over $1,000 EACH WAY - you are talking almost $3,000 per person.

Travelzoo made me smile this week when I saw this beauty of a deal.

OK - so $700 each way might not be a bargain, but hey, I'd pay that much for some of this:

My "DASH" With Fame

I think you all know how I feel about flights that are 5+ hours. I detest them - with a passion. Waaa-mbulance alert: Waaaaah I wish places weren't so far. I always scrub out for them too. Glasses, and clothing that I would usually wear to the gym are my usual fashion of choice. I usually throw my hair up in a messy ponytail about 5 minutes before I leave - as if to say "yup, I look like hobo, and I'm not ashamed of it." Life lesson here everyone, life lesson - never leave the house looking like a hobo.

In true Expedition Evans awkwardness this time around though, I was in for a bit of a surprise. It turns out that upon boarding my Virgin America flight, who do I find sitting in first class? About two feet away from where I was standing?

The ever classy, Rob Kardashian (of Keeping up with the Kardashians fame, or Kim's younger brother). As I fumbled through my bag looking for my phone (because for some reason I thought I could take a pic of him sitting on a plane and that wouldn't be weird), I quickly realized I was becoming "THAT" girl - you know, back in the day, the girl that would stop at nothing to get an autograph of one of the *NSYNC members? Not Chris though, because he was gross.

I dialed it back a bit and calmly proceeded to my seat (Bud had sat down before I did). I immediately texted every person I knew to tell them about my morning's events. Most excited was my sister. We chatted immediately on how we should proceed with this situation. Bud told me to "stop being weird" and that we would see him at baggage claim and to ask for a pic there. To which I said to him in disbelief, "What Kardashian gets their own bags?!? From baggage claim no less."

Well friends, apparently Rob does:

I was a bit too star struck, so I have to give it to Bud, because he actually went up to Rob and asked for the picture (isn't he great?). After he agreed, I awkwardly stuck my hand out and shook his hand and said, "Hi, I'm a big fan" and he replied, "Hi, thanks I'm Rob", with a sheepish grin. As Bud struggled with the setting on my camera phone (which seemed like an eternity by the way), I couldn't help but think how I looked like I had given up on life with the clothes I was wearing.

Rob, if you are out there reading this, thanks for being a good sport and humoring me a bit. You'll always have LAX Baggage Claim Area B to remember me by.

Back in the Saddle

Long time no talk you guys. Seriously. I gotta shape up with this blog thing. Don't worry - I've been keeping busy. Summer is always a crazy time, and I am happy to say that I have some fun EEE (Expedition Evans Experiences) to share with you. I was able to squeeze in a last minute trip to Cali earlier this month. I tagged along on Bud's business trip and managed to make time for some California fun in the sun. Full reports to come!

I should rephrase that - I do still have a blog. I'm afraid to say that life has been busy lately and I have not had a chance at all to post with any regularity.

I'm not apologizing because I am sure you all are really tired of hearing me apologize for everything (i.e. I'm sorry that I'm sorry). I'll just leave it short and sweet.

I do have a lot of fun things coming up - me and Bud are venturing to Cali in a bit, and you know what that means - DISNEYLAND - can I get a what! what!

I will also be sharing some more pics from our European vacay soon. So my friends, all is not lost, just a lot of "good stuff" to come. I promise. Besides, absence makes the heart grow fonder, no?

You can have your Nachos, and eat them too

How fast the weeks fly by when the weather is warm. I can't believe today is the first day of Summer! I'll make up my lack of post-age recently with my stay-cation day trip to Six Flags Great Adventure this past weekend.

Bud and I usually try to schedule a trip to Six Flags every now and then. I'm not a big fan of the 3 hour drive and well, Jersey in general, but hey, you take the good with the bad. I'll sum up the day and say we had a blast and we did enjoy a great day with our friends. I just have to bring up a sore spot that I have with Six Flags corporate for a few paragraphs.

An "Epic Fail" award goes to your Marketing Department, Six Flags. Whoever came up with the idea of putting concession stands in the middle of the queuing areas should be fired - or forced to stand in line. Not only does it really mess up the flow of the line and results in a longer overall wait time; it caused me quite a bit of drama.

A middle-aged man (who looked like Bob Saget just to give you a visual) proceeded to yell at me and my group for moving around him while he stood at the concession stand and bought what seemed like every item the concession stand sold. Now obviously, we knew the man was in front of us, and of course we would have let him back in front of us after he finished buying snacks for the whole entire theme park. As we politely passed him in line to give him room, he began shouting quite heatedly that we were "cutting him" (because this was clearly the 6th grade lunch line) and that he was "still in line". Thank you Captain Obvious.

So, of course, in true Expedition Evans awkwardness, I turn toward him and said back firmly, "RELAX. We will obviously let you back in line in front of us. Get your nachos, and it'll be FINE." This was all thanks to you, Six Flags corporate (we did let him back in line, just in case you were wondering).

What can I say, I don't like to be sassed.....and also, who REALLY needs a plate of nachos before careening down a steel track at 60 miles per hour and flipped upside down 5 times? Seriously? I digress.

It's Photo Book Go-Time

I try to soak in every memory of my trip - the sights, the people, the food, the culture. I like to take a mental snapshot of absolutely everything, if possible. Of course, pictures help. As you know, I go through a "trip withdrawal" when I get back. Mostly from enjoying a few days of doing absolutely nothing but FUN stuff. When I get back and take a look at my pic(k)s, I get really sentimental about all that. Some might say obsessively so - until Shutterfly entered my life (although Bud tells me I'm equally obsessed with it - I think I talked about how awesome it was for about a week).

Shutterfly.com (shameless plug), is one of those photo sharing websites that lets you upload and share your pictures, as well as make invitations, photo books, calendars, etc. I'm mostly obsessed with the photo book area of this website (they have really great discounts too). Nothing captures your vacay memories quite like a photo book, and helps you relive them at the same time. What I love about it is that you can make captions and edit your pictures. The prices are pretty exceptional, and it's way cooler than just buying a photo album and printing your pictures. Every trip is different, and you can create and customize the books based on what type of trip you went on.

For example, for our recent trip, I used more of a "scrapbook" theme. This past one was my best creation yet:

Warning though, it can be quite time consuming and addicting. I think I spent about 3 hours on this one........because, well, I have no life. JK, JK.

Pic(k) of the Week: Meeting the Queen

OK, well we didn't actually meet the Queen - in fact, I don't even think she was "home" when we dropped by Buckingham Palace on that sunny Sunday. We missed the Royal Wedding by about a week. I think these accommodations would certainly suit me. Fun Fact: Buckingham Palace can only be toured for two months out of the summer: August and September. Oh, and no, that's not Lady Gaga in the black sunglasses and leather jacket.....Sorry guys, there was a lot of people around.

Pic(k) of the Week: Big Ben

This is one of my favorite pictures from our trip. This pic(k) is obviously Big Ben, with the London Eye in the background. We took a city bus tour of London, which was super fun, and we were able to get some really great shots. Unfortunately I was really tired that day, and wasn't really paying attention to the tour guide, so I can't really give you any background on it (like you guys really want me to go into that anyway). What's the deal-io: The Maine Event

I hear Maine is beautiful (when it's not buried in snow). I went there once when I was like, 6 years old, so if you take advantage of this deal you will have to tell me how it is. Then again, a quaint New England getaway sounds just about my kind of speed right now. The reviews on this resort are great, I mean, the best I have EVER seen. Anybody up for some antiquing?

"At Least You're Wearing Comfortable Shoes"......

I'm not one of those girls that has a lot of shoes (believe it or not). I have literally one of each pair. Your basic black heels, brown heels, tan wedges, sneakers, and a lot of flip flops. I don't know about you, but March to October here in New York is flip flop weather- for reals in my opinion. None of the aforementioned footwear however, is suitable for Europe, apparently. If you haven't gathered already, I made some unwise fashion choices on my trip.
Due to some packing logistical issues, I had only packed about 3 pairs of shoes because of the space situation. Plus the weather was really nice, so I had to opt for flips 75% of the time. I decided to switch this post up a bit and make it more of a photo blog on my inappropriate shoe behavior.

I tried a few popular spots and the fares were pretty decent, considering of course, that it is Memorial Day Weekend. "What I Learned on my April Vacation"

There's a few things I learned on my recent trip to Europe - other than to make sure you wear pants that actually fit you and don't forget to wear a belt. So, without a further ado, and in no particular order, here we go!

On Piers Morgan vs. Ryan Seacrest:

Piers Morgan is to the UK what Ryan Seacrest is to the US. Seriously. He has about 10 talk shows AND hosts the American version of Britain's Got Talent. Enough said. Note: I'm also glad that my SAT analogy knowledge can still be put to good use.

On Television:
There's only 3 shows I can remember seeing: iCarly, Mythbusters, and "SuperCrew" - the British version of "So You Think You Can Dance?" meets "America's Best Dance Crew" - only with 14 year olds and really bad dance moves.

The British really love their Mythbusters - I'm just sayin'.

On Directions:

When someone says "you can't miss it", it's about 99.6% guaranteed that you will miss it. Horribly.

On drinks:

There's no ice anywhere in England or Ireland.

On food (this is a long one):

If you see bacon on a menu, you are basically ordering ham. If you want crispy American-style (does that sound weird?) bacon, you have to specify.

Mayo is a condiment on every sandwich.

The bread and cheese are amazing. I can't think of any other word to describe it.

A "BAP" is another word for roll. A "ROCKET" another word for baguette.

If you want potato chips, you order "crisps". If you want french fries, you order "chips".

On nationalities:

I apparently look and sound like a Canadian, eh?

On fashion:

Never wear high heels to a castle. Ever.

Half Moon Over London

I think London is now my second favorite city - San Francisco and Rio de Janiero being my #1 loves. For those of you not familiar with Foggy London-town (which was not foggy at ALL by the way), the sights London has to offer are amazing. Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, and Big Ben - every place you've read about since you were a kid - is just as cool as it seems in person.

There's a few things you need to know before you continue reading. I have issues with pants. A couple of years ago I went to Florida and lost my bathing suit bottom in a freak tubing accident (I know, how does that even happen). I went to the gym the other day and realized that my Hollister sweats (circa 2003) don't fit me as well as I would have liked them to.

I was not able to splurge on some London couture, so my jeggings (you know, looks like a jean, feels like a legging?) and black ballet flats were the best I could come up with. In my haste to get ready that morning, I forgot one essential item: my belt. Yes my friends, I dressed irresponsibly and went "belt commando". This left me hiking my pants up (to keep them from falling down) about every 5 minutes (it wasn't pretty). Which brings me to the "Trafalgar Square Incident".

The thing about us is, that we like to take funny pictures. We also like to climb on stuff. It's just how we roll. In the hustle and bustle of London's Trafalgar Square (which for some reason included a lot of Dutch people and Merengue music on the day we visited) we decided to climb up a pretty high monument to take a picture (picture below because you probably have no idea what I'm talking about). Now, I'm not really great at climbing stuff, so I had to be hoisted up (rather awkwardly I might add) about 7 feet in the air by the brothers Miller, and their mom, Clara. It wasn't an easy feat.

Now if that wasn't embarrassing enough, keep in mind the jeggings situation. Let's just put it this way, I felt a breeze that one should never feel, especially in the middle of a busy city square. I can honestly say that I've never laughed so hard in my life, and I just hope it's not on You Tube somewhere....

So there's one thing I learned in London, kids, never leave home without a belt, or at least pants that fit you correctly.......I learned a few other things too, but more on that next week!

Pic(k) of the Week: Life on the Edge - Cliffs of Moher

Ahhh it feels nice to be back on track with posts. I really did miss writing, plus I actually have some substantial stuff to write about now. You guys will just have to put up with some super-amazing-awesome Expedition Evans tales.

My pic(k)s of the week this week are from beautiful Ireland. We visited the Cliffs of Moher on Tuesday, April19th - straight from the Shannon, Ireland airport (yeah, we're hard core like that). The scenery was breathtaking and we got some great shots.

Unfortunately the photos just don't do it justice. I did manage to wear appropriate shoes that day, and also managed to NOT embarrass myself too much. Although I do believe there is footage of me running through the green fields with the Cliffs behind me - think Sound of Music meets Ugly Betty (I was wearing my glasses that day). I'll spare you guys the horror of seeing that. I will share these with you though:

What's the deal-io: Costa Rican Inspirations/Aspirations

There's nothing like coming back home after a trip and being bitten by the "travel bug". Immediately upon exiting the flight the other day, we all came to the realization that being home after a great trip was not going to cut it. I always have these crazy ideas about planning future trips whenever I get home from one. After we got home from Florida last year I had this crazy idea of traveling to Japan to see Tokyo Disneyland (I know).

My deal-io for this week is from my trusty travel-partner-in-crime - you guessed it, Travelzoo. Anybody up for some Costa Rican hot springs? For roughly $700 a person including airfare from NYC, accommodations, car rental, and breakfast you can explore this tropical paradise, and get a killer tan. *Sigh*...............A girl can only dream.....

Jaunt Across the Pond

Hello my dears! Oh I know how much you have missed me, and I'm happy to tell you that I AM BACK! Where was I, you might ask? Well, Bud and I just returned from our "jaunt" to England, Wales, and Ireland. Or, as we like to call it, THE MOTHERLAND since we both have some roots in both countries (yes I am that dramatic and that much of a nerd).

So of course you know what that means - a series of fun and informative blogs highlighting what we saw during our 12 day trip. I'll pace myself with all of the details, but we really had an amazing time. Not only did we share a lot of laughs with our fellow travelers, the Miller Fam, we took the cities/towns of Manchester, Chester, Liverpool, London, Dublin, Dingle (LOL), Cork, and Adare by storm. Somehow I managed to stumble, trip, and wear the most uncomfortable shoes ever, yet maintain an awkward grace throughout the whole time. I like to pride myself in that. It wouldn't be the same Expedition Evans experience without some awkward and embarrassing stories - and pic(ks) to boot.

I won't regale you with the details on how this trip came to be, but with much help from the Miller Fam and Travel Zoo's hot deals (I post these deals for a reason, kids), it really was an unforgettable trip. So, I'd like to use the phrase that I'm "back and better than ever", but this is a classy blog and I don't roll with clichés. I will say though, it is nice to be back States-side, but a little piece of my heart will always be across the pond........(yeah, that's not cliché at all).

Crazy Evans Weekend

My friends! How I have missed you! Shame on me, it has been awhile since I've posted. I am firm believer in "no excuses" but things have been quite crazy around here.

In the past few weeks I've battled sickness, work stress and all the while managed to help Commuter Justine get down the aisle (congratulations Justine and Joey!!!!!!). More pictures to come on that.

So my friends, this is a little note that I *promise* that there will be some "good stuff" coming your way. Think of your favorite TV show - you know when the take those super long hiatus' and you are left with re-runs and it's like super annoying? It's been increasingly challenging to get to my computer by Wednesday with a promising deal, and I really what you guys to get the full Expedition Evans experience. So sorry if I've been short-changing lately. Not my intention, I promise you!

Well now for the fun stuff! I recently had the pleasure of a jaunt in NYC this weekend with some of my favorite girls! We stayed at the Millenium Hilton in the Financial District with a sick view of the work being done at Ground Zero, which didn't interrupt our stay any, but be advised that they are doing work even on the weekends there. I happen to be searching NYC deals on Travelzoo (listed under "More deals on NYC Hotels) and came across some discounted hotel rates at the Millenium Hilton for April and onward via American Express Travel. The deals are pretty decent.

Reality Checkpoint: The Amazing Race

So one of my favorite shows of late happens to be one about travel. Shocking, I know. Given the show has been on a few years and can get a bit monotonous, it never ceases to "amaze me". If anyone *happens* to be home on a Sunday night, I recommend watching "The Amazing Race" on CBS (Sundays, 8pm - I know, shameless plug).

To sum it up quickly, twelve teams of two are chosen by producers to travel the world competing in one big international scavenger hunt. They need to complete different tasks and "check in" at certain areas. The last team to arrive at these checkpoints each episode is usually sent home packing (ha!). It's so interesting watching the teams get from one destination to another, and the last minute travel and planning. Some of the tasks are so exhausting, they can really mess with your head.

Seeing the world like that would totally be my jam though. Sign me up! Four Disney Parks in one day...remember? So without further ado my friends, here are my type 5 reasons "Why I Should" and "Why I Shouldn't" be on the show.

Why I should:

5. I really think I should be on a TV show

4. I don't qualify for the Jersey Shore (although I did get a pretty bad spray tan recently)

3. $1,000,000 is not too shabby

2. I'd get really cool luggage and can wear sweatpants every day

1. It would be the experience of a lifetime! Imagine all the blog posts.

Why I shouldn't:

5. I don't think a camera should follow me around for more than two hours

4. The camera adds 10 lbs. (Chandler: "So how many cameras are ACTUALLY ON you")

3. I get "jet lagged" very easily, and I couldn't deal with any type of weird food, or horse back riding for that matter.

2. I would end up crying at some point (and seriously, who wants to see that?)

1. A weird bug or animal will probably bite me and a medical emergency might soon ensue

What's the deal-io Wednesday: The Lazy (Travel) Song

I would kill for some sun. If you are anywhere in the Northeast this past week, I'm sure you feel my pain. It's something about that Vitamin D... My deal-io for this week includes such.

Now, I'm all about my itineraries. I like doing stuff. I like planning where to stay, where to eat, where to go, etc. Sometimes though, even I have to throw in the towel. Sometimes I'm just not man enough. What? I can't be lazy every now and then? What do you think I am? A machine? :)

This brings me to my end-all-be-all of travel laziness - THE CRUISE. You pay one price, and your accommodations, transportation (sometimes), and the most indulgent part - FOOD are all inclusive. It takes the guess work out of almost everything. I know some people can argue with me on this one, of course, you have to be a "cruise" person (I challenge the nay-sayers to write their own blog). Yes, I just used the word "nay-sayers". I'm officially 100 years old.

So maybe not a deal price wise, due to the timing of April/Spring Break, but if you live in the NY area and want to get away last minute, this deal might be for you. Carnival is offering an 8 day cruise from the port of New York to San Juan, PR, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk for roughly $1,000 per person. Keep in mind, no airfare is needed if you live in the NY metro area, and, food and activities are mostly included - for 8 days mind you. That's a lot of entertainment right there.

Pic(k) of the Week: Hot & Fresh Out the Kitchen

There are a few things in life that I can't live without. Just to name a few, my cell phone, my hair straightener, my family and my friends of course, but also, baked goods. They make me happy. There's nothing like freshly made brownies and chocolate chip cookies. I've been told I make a mean brownie and from time to time, an exceptional chocolate chip cookie.

You might ask where I'm going with this. I'm counting this as a travel related post because I do have to "travel" a bit to work, and plus I took pictures, and it's not like I do this every day. I thought it would be a nice way to kick off the weekend. I know, it's a stretch.

It can get crazy now and then in the office, and sometimes I like to make some treats for me and the girls to share. Especially if we have had a crazy week. We had "Thirsty Thursdays" not too long ago with smoothies and non-alcoholic beverages. "Fiesta Fridays" is also a fun one. I've been known to work the toaster oven like nobody's business. It can be complicated, and there is a bit of a science to it.

First of all, the toaster oven is a tricky thing - you need the right setting, and the right eye especially for chocolate chip cookies - my treat of choice yesterday. I managed to bake an entire batch of the Nestle Tollhouse Mini Cookies with the toaster oven - at work. I'm Martha Stewart - only without the prison record and bad haircut. I was pretty proud of my accomplishment, and they were super delicious.

The "Apple" of My Eye

I don' t know how much Apple spends on their marketing campaigns, but let me tell you - they work. Yes my friends, I sold myself out, and I bought the iPhone. I graduated from my pink Motoral Razr to my Blackberry Curve just last year. As soon as my cell phone carrier came out with the iPhone, I was hooked. I guess I'm just in the ideal demographic of Gen X/Y 80's kids that need a technological device to define their social status. Well done, Apple, well done. You and your catchy commercials about making life so much easier. I surrender (waves white flag), I surrender!

Enough about my frivolous purchases. This is a blog about travel, of course. I'm all about efficiency, and having a phone, ipod, and every possible Google application at my finger tips is perfect for me. Especially when I'm out and about.

Which brings me to my new love: my travel Apps. My first app installed was the "Trip Advisor" app. I can read reviews on hotels, restaurants and attractions, in seconds, and all on my phone (well, duh). There are other travel apps that I'm in the process of discovering, but really, it helps me with all my travel needs - don't even get me started on Restaurant Finder - or - the Disney related travel apps - or for that matter, Angry Birds. Hopefully this will keep me busy while I'm playing the waiting game. Loves it!

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: California Love

No, I don't mean the "Cali Love" scarf. You know that I'm always itching to find a way to wing to the West Coast. I think it's my second love - I have many first loves. The only thing that usually slows my itchy "clicker" finger is the airfare. Aside, I hate to be so "airfare" related lately, there's just so much to write about and a lot of good deals!

I've been dying to go to Disneyland for the longest time. My recent West Coast searches have included $350+ fares. I know, ouch. This really makes me hesitate, however my fabulous friends at Virgin America have put together what I like to call, a pretty awesome deal-io. Fares are currently on sale from NYC to San Francisco, LA, and Vegas starting at $149 each way. I had two awesome flights with them back in January. I highly recommend checking them out! They are really fun (um, yeah, I'm 5 years old).

Plus they have an awesome marketing campaign. Have you seen the commercials? Pretty cool.

These pretzels are making me thirsty........

Well, not anymore Continental Airlines passengers. I recently heard on the news and confirmed via this CNN post that Continental will no longer be offering snacks on their domestic flights. Forgive my mini-rant, but seriously Continental? Seriously?

I understand the usual suspects - the economy, the recession, rising fuel costs, blah, blah, blah. I pay $300+ for a flight, and I expect my complimentary soda and snacks. I know, people won't NOT fly Continental because of this. Hey, if they get me where I need to go at the best fare, then I will concede.

In a world where so little is free or ahem, "complimentary", I must say that I do enjoy cozying up to my half can of Diet Coke and a 100 calorie pack of pretzels. Is that so wrong my friends? I didn't think so. My recommendation is to stock up your carry-on with snacks prior to boarding.

OK guys - I know, I know. No excuses. I think I've said that statement about 30 times since I've started this blog, and this is the first time I've posted in a few weeks. It's wrong, I know, it's wrong. Unfortunately Expedition Evans has been "grounded" to some works stuff, sickness, illness (same thing?), some personal stuff, and a really awesome Bridal Shower (what what!).

What that means for you though is some awesome post-age coming up, as I've been home sick for three days. The creative juices have been gearing up for some serious blogging time. I know you are excited....

You know how much of a Disney nerd I am right? For those of you who don't remember, I'm the ULTIMATE Disney nerd. I recently traveled the "World" virtually, with our friends the Millers. Since I'm good and I know ma' stuff, I gave them some recommendations on what to visit first, which attractions to Fast Pass, and some of my favorite places to eat and shop. Plus, I also know some website which have real-time waits for the attractions, and what a perfect time to test them! I was pretty accurate, and I was very pleased.

What's the Deal-io Wednesday/Thursday: Spring Awakenings???

What is it about February that makes it so blah? Is it the 28 days? Is the endless winter days (although we have had some nice previews of Spring recently). I guess February is a good month to hibernate before next month's more than overdue Spring Fever.

After debating on what I should share this week, I got an update from my trusty Travelzoo VIP Newsflash - to literally just find out now that it is already sold out. You win some, you lose some. Sorry guys, I didn't know if there was anyone REALLY interested to heading to Barcelona in the next 6 weeks anyway....

So instead, I figured I would highlight a new website I found that offers some cool discounts. A "sister" website to Trip Advisor, Snique Away is a unique website that emails you updates on discounted rates on high-end resorts and hotels. These discounted rates are not generally released to public and offered "auction style", meaning that the discount will run out by a certain date and time (there's actually a countdown clock!).

What I like about it is that since it is linked with TA, the reviews and information on the hotel, amenities and surround activities is already there! It's like a one-stop-shop for travel. So efficient, I love it!

I Love Technology (but not as much as you and me)

Whoa! Napoleon Dynamite throwback. OK, I got that out of my system. I've had a bit of cabin fever lately, so please forgive my wackiness.

Did you ever stop to think about what booking and planning trips used to be like? As a late twenty-something (ouch) I can slightly recall what days were like without computers, the Internet, cell phones, and navigation systems. My recent trip to Cali made me think about these things. Bud and I were roaming around San Francisco and got into the discussion of, what did people DO before all this technology? Carry maps around? Ask strangers for help? Plan all of their routes ahead of time (not using Mapquest mind you)? What if you were in a foreign country?

I roughly remember my Moms spending hours on the phone with travel agents and airlines trying to book the best deals possible. Isn't it nice that in literally seconds you can have an entire trip planned? I like being in charge of my plans in that way (Type A personality people, what can I say). I hate to be all "golly gee the Internet is amazing", but it really is - and has certainly made my life much easier.

When we were lost in San Francisco, almost the whole weekend mind you, the Google Maps app on Bud's phone and the car's navigation system got us through each time. We didn't even have to pull out the Hagstrom, and seriously, I wouldn't even know how to read one! Shout out to the car's navi by the way, because it found the best Mexican food of my life. Yes, it was life changing Mexican food (and yes, I stole that from Spencer Pratt).

I can go on, and on, and on, but I won't. I'm interested to see how much more the travel industry changes in the future, and what impact technology will have on that change. Wow, that sounds like an essay conclusion.....feel free to discuss amongst yourselves :)

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Broadway or Bust

So, I scoured the Internet for hours (OK, you got me, maybe not hours, but at least 20 minutes) trying to find a deal this week. I've done my research, and unfortunately February is a VERY tough month for travel. Everyone is certainly sick of the winter, and travelers are flocking to get to warmer climates. Not to mention the February break that most school-aged kids have is right around the corner. You know what that means: the rate increase game. This makes it almost impossible to get a deal, especially a deal on short notice.

My deal-io for this week is pretty close to home for all of you within the Tri-state area. My recent jaunt to NYC reminded me how fun it is to go and explore the city. My trusty Travelzoo "local deals" helped me out this week, and provided me with a fun entertainment idea: Phantom of the Opera discounted tickets.

Unfortunately I've missed this show on about 3 occasions that I can think of, however I heard it is wonderful, and for the price it is being offered at, it's worth it. Who doesn't love the whimsy of a Broadway show? A discounted show at that! You know how much I love whimsy AND a discount; I might take myself up on my own offer!

Gripe-fest 2011

Well, before I start griping, I just have to give a shout out to "ma fans" LOL, because we reached 600 page views today! Thanks guys!

OK, maybe it's just that I'm in a bit of a funk this week (yes, it does happen to the best of us), but my recent travels have made me develop a mental list of travel-related things that I wanted to gripe about. So when I formulate my mental list, it's only natural that I need to share it with you guys!

Numero uno on my list-y, and this is probably one of the most awkward things that has every happened to me (other than losing my bathing suit in public) is opening the door when someone else is in the bathroom - in an airplane no less. There's a lock on the door for a reason. There's a red sign that says "occupied" for a reason. I had the "delight" on my recent flight back home from Cali of opening the door to find someone already occupying the stall (even after I politely knocked to check). Yes, it was a scene. Yes, I was mortified. Let's move on.

Number two, you should ALWAYS say thank you to your flight attendants and captains that got you to your destination safely. Why you may ask? Because it's polite and you should! That's why!

Number three, please do not cough in my face. Do I even need to explain?

Number four, why does EVERYONE insist on getting up immediately after the plane lands. Like you are going to get out ANY quicker by jumping up, grabbing your bag out of the overhead bin and standing in the aisle when there's 100 people in front of you (and this usually results in me getting hit in the head by someone's carry on at least twice).

Last, but certainly not least, number five. Give me some space when I go through security check?!?! Personal space my dears, personal space.The last thing I need is to have a fellow passenger all up in my grill trying to get inches closer to get through security faster. Playa puh-lease....

Man, gripe much???? I hope this post didn't sound as angry it looks......

Pic(k) of the Week: Exploring Alcatraz

I wanted to highlight our second day in San Francisco via pic(k)s of the week this week. You guys obviously saw how much Ioved the Sunshine State. Our second day was even better. We spent the night at the San Francisco Hilton (shout out) and the next day toured the city. We found the most amazing Crepery (is that even a word?) while touring the area around the hotel. Later we walked down to Fishermen's Wharf, where Alcatraz Landing is located for a tour. Alcatraz Island is small island located in the San Francisco Bay.

Alcatraz is infamous for its penitentiary, which housed the most notorious criminals (Al Capone being one of them). There is a ferry service that takes you to and from the Island - much like the way the prisoners were transported back when the prison was operating (it closed in 1963). For $30 a person we were transported from the Pier to the Island, and toured the whole Island for about 3 hours. Most of the Island is in shambles, but there are helpful explanations and pictures of what the Island "once was".

California Looooveeeee

I always get butterflies in my stomach every time I get to travel. There's always that semi-nauseous feeling I have when I'm ready to go, especially when I need to get to my destination via air. There's something extremely unsettling about airports. The food, the hostility, the disgruntled employees...I don't know what it is, but it makes me kind of cranky.

My whirlwind California Adventure (San Francisco & San Jose in 2.5 days!!!) started last Saturday. Bud had some work to do in the Sunshine State, and I was able to tag along for a few days. I had the best flight experience ever, with Virgin America. Seriously guys, check them out!! It's really not your run of the mill airline, with your run of the mill "wait all I get is peanuts" food options. Also, WiFi on a plane? Sign me up! Not to mention interactive games, TV, and a really cool interior. It made my 6 hour flight seem, well, like only 3 hours. You know how I can get antsy

We landed at around 2:00 pm Pacific Time and were on the freeway by 3. I love the Cali air. It was "short-sleeve" weather with a little bit of a breeze. The sun was shining and one word came to mind: PERFECTION. I could move there. On second thought, with the earthquakes, super-storm warnings and what-not, ehhh...but still - simply gorgeous! We'll put that one on the back burner for right now.

One thing though, holy jet lag Batman! I was exhausted by the time the first day was through. I'm a sensitive one with the time change apparently. Plus we did so much in a short period of time! More to come, but here's some views from our first stop, the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge!!!

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Let's Make A Deal

The task of planning a trip can be pretty overwhelming. I even shudder at the thought sometimes. You know I consult a lot of guides before I actually book a trip. Even deciding where to start, and which website to start with, is a daunting task.

Commuter Justine gave me some insight on a new way to book. She actually got a great deal for her honeymoon (yay! wedding!) from Orbitz.com. You know those chat boxes that pop up asking if you need help (which makes you second guess yourself and ask, DO I NEED HELP???)? She figured talking to an agent might help her through the process. Well my friends, it resulted in a great deal of savings, and the agent was apparently wonderful. She was able to customize her vacation package and walk away spending less than she originally planned.

I checked out the website and it is very user friendly and with a little time, and perhaps the right agent, you could build a great trip. Who'd a thunk, right? Congratulations to Commuter Justine!

Delayed Pic(k) of the Week: ATV Adventure

When we visited St. Lucia, Bud kidnapped me and against my will signed us up for the "ATV Adventure" through St. Lucia. I almost died. Twice. Not exactly my idea, but it was something Bud wanted to do. Aren't I sweet? He does have to put with a lot, so I guess it's the least I could do. This is the view from one of the hills we rode up to.

My brand new kicks (love my K Swiss) were ruined in the process. I was not happy.

We did have fun though!

Pack it up, Pack it in

Let me begin (I'm sorry, I had to).

I had some problematic posting issues last week...Sorry guys! My Internet was down the last few days, and as you can imagine, I was devastated. I'm sure all of you were too. Apparently I can't access my pic(ks) at the moment either, so you will just have to deal with my post for this week. *Sigh*, technology.

I've come to believe that packing is a scientific process. There are so many variables involved in packing for your trip, you literally have to come up with a scientific equation to make every inch of your suitcase or travel bag count. I can definitely over-pack (you know how much I like to be prepared for EVERY situation). Due to all the limitations the airlines and TSA has now, I'm getting better at figuring out what my essentials are.

The airlines certainly do not make it easy either. The airlines usually charge for any extra bags (first checked bag flies free). If it's a short trip (like 5 days or less) I try to pack me and Bud separately in two carry-ons. Trust me, it can be done!

Bringing only one carry-on per person has its perks, since you don't have to mess with baggage claim. Besides, even the THOUGHT that my bag might not come down the conveyor belt absolutely terrifies me. Side note; next time you are at the airport and happen to be by the baggage claim, be sure to people watch. I think you can tell a person's personality just by seeing them fight their way through the crowd and haul their bags begrudgingly off to side. It's great. Really.

Oh, and another piece of advice if you do plan on checking. Never assume that yours is going to be the only electric blue or bright orange bag. There's usually about a dozen others. Wanna be creative? Cover yours in duct tape and write your last name all over the tape with magic marker. You'll be able to spot it no problem.

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Blog-gy London-town

So you guys know how much I love Travel Zoo (really, it gets me through the week). This deal-io is the very reason why I love it so much. Pretty much every deal that I've taken advantage of so far on Travel Zoo has been a good one (including my spa evening this week). This deal is no exception.

My deal-io for this week takes us on a six night jaunt across the pond to foggy London-town. The city of red telephone booths, mediocre food (so I hear), Big Ben, Peter Pan (kind of), and Royal weddings. I've been pricing solely airfare to London. Let me tell you, it's outrageous. For the same amount of money per person to fly to London, with this package you could fly there, have accommodations for 6 nights, and get a daily breakfast included. No brain-er there.

Check out the reviews on the "Go Today" touring company before booking. Sometimes you have to be careful with these tour groups. You'll get a good feel once you scope them out a little bit more.

For about $700 you could be sipping tea with the Queen. Or maybe not (shrug). Fun fact: Buckingham Palace is only open for tours during limited times July through September every year.

Rest, Relaxation, and Rail Road

Sometimes it's nice to do something you don't normally do. It breaks up the week. Last night after work, I ventured into NYC for a spa evening with my friend that works in the City. We call her Commuter Justine by day when she's in work mode, and well, Justine by night. She writes an awesome blog about her life experiences and her take on the world. She was the one that actually inspired me to start my own blog, which brings me to this post.

OK, enough mushy stuff. I am fortunate enough to have a pretty easy work day commute. I wake up late and literally roll myself out of bed, put on my pair of fake Uggs and walk out the door. I drive twenty minutes and I'm at work. I rarely go into the City by myself, so last night was a pretty apprehensive night for me. I had never ridden the subway system by myself, and have no idea sense of direction. Those of you who know me can imagine my nausea. Hey, I like to worry, it's how I do.

I embarked on my hour and twenty minute train ride into the City at around 5:00 pm. Dressed for the City cold, I had on my boots, my "Cali Love" Scarf (see pic below) and my boots. It might has well have been Alaska. No doubt about it, I was ready for a journey.

I was buying my train ticket/metro card combo (I felt sooo commuter savvy), when a guy with a camera came up and said he was taking pictures for the train company. I must have looked overall perplexed, because he had this "don't look at me like I'm a weirdo" look on his face. Does that seriously happen? I politely declined using good judgement, and proceeded to board the train.

I must really look like I know where I'm going, because upon settling in, the older gentleman sitting next to me asked if the train went directly to Penn Station. Without hesitation I was able to answer "yes", for I knew the answer. Little did I know that I had just started a very long conversation on world travel. Yes, I am one of these people. As I don't commute very often, and apparently neither did this other gentleman, my train and stranger etiquette is not what it should be. I guess I just have a nice face. We chatted a bit and I learned more about Dubai and the Maldives Islands than I really ever wanted to know...I don't even know where the Maldives Islands are (but I went with it).

We quickly parted ways as we pulled into Penn and it was facing me: the subway. I survived the rush hour of Penn Station - have you every seen hundreds of people running like maniacs to catch a train after an exhausting day? Try Penn Station at 6:30 pm on a weekday. Long story short, I made it to the spa and enjoyed a relaxing night of pampering with Commuter Justine. I was pretty satisfied with my overall travel ease, as I had battled one of my biggest fears: traveling in NYC by myself (well, partly, we rode the train back together). I guess I can cross that off my travel bucket list!

Pic(k) of the Week: Sky's the Limit

I know I've definitely used these pic(k)s in other posts, but they are so awesome (OK maybe awesome is pushing it), I had to use them again. I'm working on my photography skills and also trips for 2011.

The first is the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, which overlooks the whole city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (one of my favorite cities). This is considered one of the "new" wonders of the world. A fun fact for you reading pleasure, this statue is a Brazilian icon, and can be seen from ANYWHERE in the city of Rio. Kind of cool, but kind of creepy at the same time.

To get to the top viewing area of the statue, you take a cable car up through a forest. The second pic(k) is the vantage point from the main viewing area.

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Last Minute Luxuries

Very rarely do I advocate the "last minute deals" that so many of the travel websites advertise. This is for two reasons. The first, the only reason that these trips are so cheap is because you literally book at the last minute - I would never be able to get off of work that quickly. The second, there's usually other costs entailed with this "last minute" excursion, unless of course, you plan on staying within a drivable distance. For example, a five star boutique hotel in Miami is advertising 60% off per night on a weekend? Sign me up! Oh, wait, I have to fork over AT LEAST $500 for Bud and I to fly there (remember, last minute deals rarely apply for airfare), not including cost of food and incidentals.

OK, I've ranted enough for today. Let me get to the point!

My deal-io this week is a close-to-home trip, but not really at the same time. I think it's a nice compromise of getting out of NY for a bit, but also minimizing costs. Norwegian Cruise Line is offering one of those good ol' "cruise to nowhere" deals the port of NYC. You can get away fairly cheap with one of these bad boys. Food, entertainment, and lodging are all-inclusive. All the while you are drinking in the lovely seaside sights of New York! Not a bad night out on the town without breaking the bank!

I called NCL and the outdoor pools are even heated! How cool is that?

All the rooms are priced accordingly. Just to give you an idea, on a Friday in February you can get away with an inside stateroom for $99 for the first two people, and then $69 per person thereafter. Upgrade to an ocean view room for about $20 more. Park your car at a garage near the port and you can literally call it day! The boat departs at 4pm (you can board earlier though) and arrives back at the port at 8am the next day (you need to be off by 10am). You can't have it any easier than that my friends!

Missing America: There's No Place Like Home

First 2011 post!

Have you ever gotten to that breaking point on a trip, where you are like, enough is enough, I'm ready to go home? No matter what the reason is (i.e. being gone for a really long amount of time, sick of your fellow travel partner, or simply missing home), I think we all suffer from this during some point in our trip. Especially if it's a long one.

The reason I bring this is up is because my friend James has been touring Australia the last few weeks. We were just talking about length of trips and how long is too long. While there is no doubt that it's an AMAZING time (hello, Great Barrier Reef? Sydney Opera House? Koalas - although I would probably die if I held one), it must be an exhausting-ly long time away from HOME in general, not to mention A LOT of travel.

My trip breaking point is about 9-10 days. My longest trips were my trip to St. Lucia/Florida (12 days) and my trip to South America (13 days). When I was in St. Lucia, I actually think I said out loud at one point, "I miss America"....I really just wanted the general familiarity of my normal surroundings, and of course my family and friends.

There's something to be said about disappearing for a bit and then coming back to your normal routine. It's like you almost appreciate the routine more. It's nice to come back to some degree of normalcy, and of course, your own bed and pillow. I love that feeling!

Plus, the sooner you get home, the sooner you can start planning your next trip! That travel "bug" sure is infectious!

Pic(k) of the week: Disastrous Republic

In January of 2010 (almost a year ago!) we traveled to Punta Cana, DR. Now, I have mentioned that I wasn't a huge fan of our DR trip. Mostly because there was a lot of stress around it - the huge earthquake that hit Haiti happened a few days before we were supposed to leave for the trip. Yes my friends, Haiti and DR are on the same island. I can't even tell you about the nausea.....I was a nervous wreck until the plane landed and we were safely at our resort.

We stayed 5 nights at the Majestic Elegance, which was very beautiful and our accomodations were gorgeous. The food left a bit to be desired, but I guess you take the good with bad. I believe I said it in my other post; you get what you pay for...The main thing was that were safe and had some funny stories to come back home with. Here are some of my favorite parts of the trip:

Side note: Beware of the "Bali Beds" - I layed on one and got little bug bites all over the side of my face and caused me to have an allergic reaction. I took benadryl and wore cortizone cream for about a week straight. Strangers were asking me what happened to my face...you can imagine my horror....and not to mention my fear of bed bugs...

What's the Deal-io (Thursday): End of Year Sentiments

Do you ever feel like time is flying by so quickly you can't even deal with it? I can't believe that we are on the verge of 2011. Where did the time go? Before I get all nostalgic and sentimental about the goings-on of this past year, I should jump into my deal-io for the week. I apologize for the delay. Wednesday caught me by surprise this week. I blame it on the snow - and, well, my laziness.

Since it is the end of the year, now is a good time to try to negotiate deals because, like retail stores, everyone is trying to get rid of their "inventory" and gear up for a new travel year. Domestic travel is especially discounted. This Best Western located on Disney Property (close to the Downtown area) has $79 per night (with a two night minimum) including a continental breakfast and free shuttles to the Parks. Honestly, you really can't get much better than that. The special runs from January 1 to March 31, with some blackout dates. The TA reviews are very favorable. Try to complement with some cheap fares from Jet Blue and Southwest, and you are good to go!

A Familiar Feeling

Welcome to winter my friends. An exhausting time of year where snow boots, gloves, shoveling, blizzards, and other wintry-what-have you are part of every day life here in NY. This is when I trade in my flip flops and T-Shirts and opt for my snowboarding coat and fake Uggs. It's a sad day when the flips get traded in *sigh* - an all too familiar feeling that, yes, it's that time of year again - which means that snowboarding trips are right around the corner.

With that being said, and to follow-up from Wednesday's post, Bud, our friends Jay and Josh, and myself drove up to Belleayre Mountain Saturday for some winter sport-age. Our journey began at around 6:30am and after surviving the Thru-way *shudder* and Bud's early 2000's play list, we made it up to the mountain by around 10am. For a holiday, the mountain was EXTREMELY busy and everyone was quite frenzied. Note to self: never wear sneakers with ankle socks and leggings when having to walk from a snowy parking lot to the main lodge. It was a beautiful wintry day though, with some sun and clouds, although the conditions on the mountain were a bit icy. The views from the lift were absolutely breathtaking. Trees trimmed with snow and icicles, and a blanket of white snow underneath? Sounds so Disney, I love it!

Remember what I said about my snowboarding skills being "awkwardly mediocre" at best? Well, I think I can drop the mediocre and crank it up a notch to "awkwardly average" at best. Hey, at least it's progress. There were a few low points though. Josh did get seriously hurt and had to visit the ER in Kingston (poor Josh - he's OK though). I suffered a number of less than graceful falls from the lift, had some tears here and there, and in one section of the trail, a face-full of snow.

Snowboarding is always an experience and you never know what day you are going to have until you get there. What makes the experience worthwhile for me is sharing it with Bud and my friends. Their smiles and laughs usually get me through the somewhat terrifying experience of flying down a mountain at what seems like 50 miles an hour. At least I can say I did it, right? Maybe we'll have to put snowboarding in the Alps on hold for awhile......I still need to learn toe-side...

Wow, Friday already! I can't believe it! Since I shared some snow with you guys on Wednesday, I figured we'd bring it back to some nice warm weather! This pic was taken from our hotel room when we visited Cancun (shout to the Hilton Cancun!!). I wanted to remember this view forever. There's something about the sun glistening on the water, the palm trees, and the intricate design of the pool. Doesn't it look perfect? *Sigh* Memories of the warm Mexico sun are all I have right now....as I sit and type with my hot chocolate and am bundled up in my blanket. I really need a Snuggie!

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Winter Sport-age

Yes my friends, winter is *OFFICIALLY* here, although it seems like it was here two months ago. These blustery, obnoxiously cold NY days have contributed to some pretty nice snowboarding/skiing weather. Now, you know I'm all about the sand and sun, and you know how much I hate the Thru-way, but I do like to sport a snowboarding jacket every now and then. I'm thinking of adding a helmet this year to the wardrobe though - I've had some nasty spills.

Snowboarding is one of Bud's favorite past times and he is really good at it (I'm not just saying that, he really is!). I would rate myself as " awkwardly mediocre" at best (and you know how much it kills me, because I hate mediocrity). What I lack in snowboarding experience I make up for in my writing skills...

Anyway, my deal-io for this week is $25 lift tickets this Friday and Saturday at Belleayre Mountain. Usually lift tickets are around $50+. If you are willing to hit the slopes, I highly recommend this deal. Sure, there are better mountains, I'm not disagreeing. I'm a big fan of Stratton, VT myself. However, Belleayre is a pretty easy mountain to navigate and if you haven't experienced the winter sport-age before, it's a great place to start. The lifts are open from 9a-4p. If you don't have any gear, rentals are $25.

Literally Laughing Out Loud

Well, it's Monday, and I think we all need a good laugh. I definitely have a case of the Mondays today. I was looking at some old pics that instantly brightened my day by bringing back some fun memories.

Have you every visited somewhere and found the most random things amusing? That's on of my favorite parts of traveling. The memories you make and the good laughs you have along the way are priceless. These photos below were taken last year over Thanksgiving that made us "LOL".

Cancun is notorious for little market places and great deals. Don't forget to haggle! I don't even know what this is, but apparently "it's is a bag"....

I really wish I could come up with a jazzy-er title for today's post - but it's been a long week and I have been sick (excuses, excuses, I know). My wit only goes so far. Sorry folks (you know how I hate mediocrity).

What's not mediocre are the pic(k)s for this week. HUGE shout to J-Mills and his little bro, PastaMillerBoy for helping me out this week. Let's give them a round of applause *clapping*. They embarked on a journey to the Galapagos Islands back in the Spring of 2009. Believe it or not, you CAN visit the Galapago Islands (which are islands off the coast of Ecuador). Fun factoid, they only let a certain number of guests visit the Islands each year. You are not allowed to disturb the animals in their natural habitat. From what I understand, you are almost tripping over the animals...they are like, literally crossing your path!

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: A Pilgramage to Boston anyone?

Oh yes, it's that time of week again. Wednesday! Aren't these weeks just flying by! I've given you guys enough warm weather posts to make everyone severely in sun withdrawal (I can't believe we have snow already). I'll highlight deals on our big neighbor city to the North - Boston!

If you guys have a hankering for really good New England Clam Chowder, or a mediocre baseball team (it had to be said), Travelzoo posted an amazing nightly rate at the Hilton Boston Back Bay. Hilton is offering $119 per night (around $136 with taxes and fees) for select dates from now until March - including weekends! I really love the Hilton Group (thanks Paris) - they really know how to treat guests well. Normally this hotel runs about $200++ per night with taxes. It is located in the heart of Boston, near the Financial District and near mass transit. I checked the TA reviews and they are great!

Beantown has a lot to do and see, although you might want to wait till closer to March when the weather is a bit warmer!

Everyone's A Critic

Do you ever sometimes feel like you missed your calling? Sometimes I think that I should have been a some kind of reviewer. Not like a food critic, but some kind of critic of hotels or destinations, or something like that. How cool would that be?

While I can't pursue this dream professionally, I turn to my next best option(s) - obsessing over travel guides, and posting write-ups on Trip Advisor (TA). I love research. Yes, I am a big nerd. I've worn glasses since I was five and worked in the attendance office in high school during my lunch period. I like knee socks and getting a full eight hours sleep. I also like office supplies and crossing things off my "to-do list".

My nerd-like tendencies also include love of books. I mean actual books - sorry, I don't own a Kindle. I still have the first Ipod shuffle that Apple came out with in 2005 - playa, puh-lease. My recent purchase involved some travel guides - ahhh I love breaking open the books and reading about what exciting places and things a destination has. My recent purchase included The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland Paris. I have no plans to visit there ANY time soon, but I love the fact that there might be a time WHEN I can actually use that book - although by then it might be severely outdated. Trust me, I'll get over it.

All these guides have some great tips as far as what time of year to go, must-sees, and how to get from point A to point B. I really like Frommer's travel guides, and if you ever go to Disney, check out Birnbaum's guides. My friend James recently recommended the Lonely Planet series of guides. There's plenty out there, you just have to check out which style you like the best.

For reviews, I hit up TA right away. I do not book or reserve ANYTHING without consulting TA first. This website has "user" reviews on everything from airlines to hotels to restaurants. Their forums have a ton of useful information. The reviews are pretty honest and accurate. The reviews and posts are generally entertaining and make for a good read. I love hearing what fellow travelers have to say! What/who do you guys consult?

Pic(k) of the Week: The girl who visited Ipanema

Well it is that time of week my friends - my pic(k) of the week this week is another beach related one. Sorry, it is just RIDICULOUSLY cold here.

These pics are taken from the famous Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio is one of my favorite cities. The city, the culture, the people, the food - I loved every minute I was there. If it's on anyone's travel bucket list, I recommend visiting. It's worth a trip.

While my time there was short, I saw so many things. Rio is a cool city because you have everything: mountains, beach, and "big city" buildings, all in one place. In the last picture you can see the Sugar Loaf Mountains in the distance (those people totally messed up my photography flow). Although it was a bit of an overcast day, we enjoyed the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Watch out for those waves though, and there's not much of a shelf....I ended up getting slammed by a wave and dragged out. I survived though, along with the 30 mosquito bites I got on that trip (I was pretty sure I was going to get malaria or Dengue fever - does anyone even know what that is?). All in all, it ended up being a pretty awkward time - but - it was a trip of a lifetime.

Yeah, I don't know who those people are.

What's the Deal-io Wednesday: Seriously CheapCaribbean?

I came across this little beauty in my Travelzoo newsletter that I get once a week. Have I told you how much I love Wednesdays? That's when I get all of my alerts of what travel deals are out there.

This all-inclusive resort located in Puerto Plata, DR is $20.10 per person, per night for a minimum of a four night stay from January 3, 2011 until December 20, 2011. There's about a $7 tax per person, per night, also. Booking has to be done by this Friday, so if you are looking for a last minute trip, now is the time to do it! You must book via the CheapCaribbean.com website.

Traveler beware, I'm sure there is some sort of sales pitch involved with timeshare - there's always a catch! For sand and sun though, I would definitely pay the price! Find yourself a nice cheap air deal to DR (JetBlue is probably your best best), and you are good to go!

Now, I've been to Punta Cana in DR, and, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan. I'll get to that trip in a later post. I would go back to DR, but only for the right deal. This I would try out though. I browsed some of the reviews on Trip Advisor site and they are pretty favorable, and a lot of people had taken advantage of this deal. Do keep in mind of course, that you always get what you pay for!!!

Cabin Fever (the good kind?)

Not to go all "Me Monster" on everyone, but, as you have probably seen so far, I'm not really an outdoors-y kind of person. There are several factors. First, I'm not really into "braving the elements". Second, almost every time I go outside I get bitten by every single insect you can imagine (I still have scars from this past summer). Third, as a child of the 80s, I do really live a life of convenience. I'm sorry to admit it, but I am a product of mass consumption. To quote a Lilly Allen song, "..it's not my fault, it's how I'm programmed to function".

Me and Bud joke around all the time that I have probably spent about 15 minutes total outside my whole entire life (exaggerated of course). When I was little I spent most of my time reading books and writing stories. I was ignorant of the outside world - kind of like Rapunzel (sorry, I saw the movie last night and immediately fell in love with it). Those Disney movies get me every time (*tear*).

You can imagine my hesitation when Bud and I signed up to go on a hiking trip with some of our friends in October 2010. I was excited to spend a weekend away with our peeps, but hundreds of questions swirled through my brain. How cold is it going to be? Will there be bugs? What are we going to do? Do we have enough food? What exactly does "roughing" it entail? I was literally nauseous until the day we left. After an extensive shopping trip to Target and Wal-Mart (the best stores EVER), and borrowing all of our camping gear from my in-laws, I finally felt prepared. What's a camping trip without hummus and peach mango salsa???

So how did it go? I mean, I knew we were going to have good time, but we had a GREAT time! Shout out to the KOA Newburgh, NY because it was a really nice setup! We stayed in a cute little cabin and sat by a wonderful fire (thank you Bry & Craig), ate a ton of yummy food, sang songs, told stories, and played games. It was everything I wanted it to be. We also had a wonderful breakfast overlooking Mohonk Mountain (thank you James), a hiking trip, and apple picking at a local orchard. It was a great weekend! And no bug bites! Or car accidents!

By Sunday night I was so upset that we had to go home. We shared so many laughs and had so much fun with all of our friends. As we made the travel back home on the Thru-way (oh how I despise you Thru-way) I couldn't help but think that I actually was outdoors-y for once in my life. This was a BIG accomplishment for me and my awkwardness. There was something about the fresh mountain air I guess. Although I couldn't have survived without my friends. You guys are the best!!

Since Wednesdays are now known as "What's the Deal-io Wednesdays", Fridays will now be known as "Pic(k) of the Week Fridays". Which, you guessed it, is a posting of a pic from the Evans Photo Gallery. I know you are all super excited about this.

As it is December and the first real cold and miserable weather spell has hit NY, I figured a little bit of warmth should be introduced this week. These pics were taken at the Sandals Resort in St. Lucia in October of 2006. After a VERY early flight we arrived early afternoon at the resort. At this point in time our room wasn't ready, so we had to chill in the outside restaurant/bar until it was ready (I think we ended up eating here every day). As we dined on delicious jerk chicken and the best jalapeño quesadilla I have ever had, we got a look at this view:

What's the Deal-io

I'm not made of money. I wish I was, but I'm not. Traveling is no doubt expensive. I get nauseous forking over $8 to just drive across the George Washington Bridge (I know the states of NJ and NY are completely broke, but seriously?). Forget about purchasing airline tickets. Thinking about that makes me completely ill.

It goes without saying that when it comes to traveling, everyone comes up with a strategic plan of attack to find the BEST (and by BEST I mean CHEAPEST) form of travel possible. This takes into consideration several opportunity costs such as travel time, length of stay, comfort of accommodations, etc. Bottom line, you search for deals to help your budget's bottom line. Who doesn't love a good deal? To be honest, finding a good deal gets me through the day!

Road Trippin'

Who doesn't love a road trip? I mean, I'm not a huge fan of being crammed in a car for 3+ hours, but it is fun. Of course, you defs need the right people, the right amount of junky snacks, and the right kind of music for a road trip. When I was younger I would make custom "mixes" (which entailed taping songs I liked off the radio onto a cassette tape - painfully old school, I know). Thanks to Ipods and MP3s, my music mixes have gotten way more high tech, and a bit better, I might add. Although I do enjoy what Bud and I like to call "the scan it!" feature on our radio. What can I say, we like to have options.

As I'm sure you guessed already, this past weekend we decided to take a very quick trip up to my aunt and uncle's house in upstate New York (or Siberia, as we like to call it). It's about 5 hours each way - yes, we drove about 10 hours in a 24-hour period. Did you guys know that we are crazy? I think now you do.

Oh, New York State Thru-way, how much you love to torture me. With your misleading signs (Interstate 90 west is still considered Interstate 87??) and your 30-40 mile long stretches between each exit. I loathe you. Although I do have to give props to "rest area management" for leasing space to Starbucks. Shout out to them for caring about my caffeine addiction (New Baltimore Rest Area Starbucks, what! what!).

Ahhh yes, the open road. It would not be a successful "Evans Road Trip" if we didn't 1) get lost, 2) get into a minor disagreement on who gets to pick which radio station to listen to, and 3) have to stop at a store because we forgot something (every time people, every time). Overall, everything went well, and it was nice to see my family - although their town has no cell service, which was killing me!!!!! I guess family is worth sacrificing some things for :)

Wow guys! Sorry for the delay! Crazy past few days. I'm long overdo on a write up of our last day in Disney, so here we goooo!!

I hate "goodbyes". I hate being a weepy, teary mess when I say goodbye (I was a HOT MESS last year when I left Cancun). I feel the same way when I leave Disney. I know it's really just a "see you real soon" as Mickey Mouse says, but I really hate leaving.

It's almost like a waste of a day too. You're already packed up to go, you're already checked out and sitting in the big comfy chairs in the lobby waiting to picked up. All the while new guests keep pouring in ready to start their vacations, as you sit and wallow in the fact you just dropped a TON of money and now it's time for you to go home. Not to mention a hefty credit card bill is quickly coming your way.

We chose a 7:00 pm flight from Orlando, so we had a few hours to kill. We woke up late, hung out at the room, and made our way to Downtown Disney around 11:00am. We enjoyed an early lunch at the Earl of Sandwich (or sang-wich, as I like to say). Who would have thought that smoked turkey, buttermilk ranch dressing, and cranberry sauce would go so well together - apparently Earl of Sandwich corporate. It was one word, scratch that, three words: A-MAZ-ING. I could totally eat one right now.

After walking around a bit we stopped at the Ghirardelli Ice Cream Parlor for dessert. Don't even get me started. - OK I will anyway The ice cream was the best - we each got our own sundaes - that's how good they were! Think of a 1950's malt shop/ice cream parlor, with a Disney twist. I mean come on, how could it not be good? We wrapped up around 2:30 pm and headed back to Saratoga Springs via ferry boat - it was a beautiful ride.

We killed some time in the arcade and politely listened to a Disney Vacation Club Timeshare sales pitch - great way to kill an hour, let me tell you (we didn't buy into it). At least I had some reading material for the flight back (I gave Sky Mall a break this time). As the flight attendant scanned my boarding pass, I took one glance back at the airport waiting area, and with a tear in my eye and my carry-on in hand, I bid farewell to one of my favorite places. This is how we do: Part Deux

You might ask what going "Park Commando" entails. Let's just say; I do work. I go into hyper drive and it's go-time. Once I hit the gates of a Disney Park, I'm on a mission. I'm on a mission to cover as much ground as I possibly can in the time allotted. The less time I have in a Park presents more of a challenge.

That's the way I like it.

This year proved to be especially challenging, as we realistically (and financially), could only visit the Parks for one day (2 nights/3 days, remember?). It was my goal this year to see all 4 Disney Parks (Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, and Epcot) in one day. I know what you're thinking - that's insanity. It is, and I am insane, but I love the thrill of a challenge. Visiting all the parks in one day is definitely not for the faint of heart, and hey, I like life in the fast lane! This was actually on my travel "bucket list" - which I can successfully say that I was able to cross off!

We calculated the average wait times that we've experienced over the years and figured how long it would take to get through everything we wanted to see, factoring in crowd levels, transportation time, food breaks, and other stops along the way (Food & Wine Festival stops...yum!). I'll spare you guys the specifics, but by 9:00 am we were at Animal Kingdom, by about 12:30 pm we were at Disney's Hollywood Studios, by about 2:00 pm we were at Magic Kingdom, by about 5:00 pm we are at Epcot. I have never been in so many different kinds of moving vehicles in one day. We were able to see all the attractions we wanted to see, plus, we were able to fit in seeing Sugar Ray perform at Epcot (remember them?).

By around 10:30 pm we were back at our room, and completely exhausted. I felt a great sense of accomplishment (*sigh*, don't you love that?). It was a great day!

I don't have to tell many of you - I'm a Disney addict. I love the crowds, the queues, and the craziness. I spend endless hours on my travel websites trying to figure out a way to make my Disney fix happen. Last month me & Bud indulged a bit and took a last minute "quick fix" trip to Disney World - 2 nights/3 days. I mean, IT WAS our anniversary (hah, like I need an excuse). Because it would be terribly boring to make one long blog entry, I'm going to split it up over a couple of entries (I can hear the cheering/jeering, I'm not sure which).

My search for an affordable Disney trip happened mid-September. Bud and I had time off that we had to use, and I was in extreme need of a Disney fix. Southwest had some affordable flights, and since October is off-season at Disney, I found some breaks on the Saratoga Springs Resort at Disney.

Flash-forward to October, and it was go-time! We opted for the 10am flight and after a not-so-wonderful airport breakfast, we were soon in on our way. Thank goodness for the 2.5 hour flight (as you know, I get antsy) because before I knew it, we disembarked and were at my favorite airport, my home-away-from-home, Orlando International (I know, it's really sad). Bud and I proceeded straight to the Magical Express pick-up. As soon as we got on the bus, I looked out the window and said, "I can't believe we're here". The sun, the palm trees, the excitement as you pass under the "Welcome to Walt Disney World" property sign, always makes me feel like a kid again.

We arrived at the hotel around 2:00 pm and thanks to the fabulous invention of on-line check-in, our room was ready. The Saratoga Springs Resort resembles the town of Saratoga Springs in upstate NY, circa early 1900s, where "Health, History, and Horses" is the motto. The building in this resort used to be the Disney Instute where classes and training were offered - if anyone remembers, or cares (shrug). After a quick tour of the grounds, we were inside our room. Here are some pics:

The rest of the day was pretty relaxing. Although a bit breezy, we hung out by the pool for a bit and soaked up some sun. The pool bar had some great margaritas and a DJ! That is totally my scene right there. We headed back to the room around 5ish and it was time to get ready to eat!

After a bus ride that seemed to take FOREVER (it was almost painful how long it took), we arrived at the Beach Club resort. In my last blog entry, I mentioned the Cape May Cafe. This is our favorite restaurant. It's an "all-you-care-to-eat" New England style clam-bake, and let me tell you - we cared to eat A LOT. I think I ate about 3 bowls of clam chowder - that stuff, man, it's pretty serious. We took a stroll along the Boardwalk and we were able to catch some of the fireworks from Epcot's Illuminations, and I really felt like I was home. There's something about the night air, the fireworks, and spending it with the perfect person that really makes an evening special (sigh).

At around 10:00 pm the day's travels and activities had caught up with us. We were spent! My pillow was calling me. We decided to turn in because the next day was a big day- it was my day - it was Park Commando Day! More to come on that....I'll let you soak the Disney in for right now.

Food for Thought

I think everyone would agree that a big part of traveling is sampling the local cuisine. Everyone likes to eat, right? Some moreso than others, but that's besides the point. I was rummaging through my online photo gallery (I love you Shutterfly), and noticed that we like to eat - A LOT. Let me rephrase that - we have a lot of "food-centric" photos. That sounds classier, doesn't it?

Remember Rusty from the "Ocean's" franchise - in almost every scene he's eating something? That's Bud. For some reason, I have a lot of photographs of him and food. I'm not really sure why, but I guess it's a funny reminder of what "food-y" experience we had during the trip. Usually there's some kind of story behind it. Up in the Air (not the movie)

I get antsy when I fly. Somewhere between finishing my 100 calorie packet of stale pretzels (to which I always say "these pretzels are making me thirsty"), and desperately trying to see if I can get a glance of someone's watch to see what time it is, I've exhausted all options to distract my attention. I basically start to lose it. It's at this time when I reluctantly pick up the SkyMall magazine, located conveniently in the seat that's about an inch from my knees, to occupy me until I have to put my tray table up.

Just to give you a visual, while I am fidgety and looking at the next opportunity to "roam about the cabin", Bud is SOUND ASLEEP, like he was born to sleep in any moving vehicle. I never really get to share my thoughts with anyone on these items when I'm up in the air. So today, I'm going to torture you guys with some of my faves! I can almost hear the groans over cyberspace. I'll make it fun, I promise!

Does this count as a carry on?

I think the guy's face in the picture says it all. How is that comfortable?

One word: Classy.

This is actually pretty cool. We do know people that bought it, and comes with little push-pins so you can mark places you've been, you plan to go, and what's on your travel "bucket list". I'd like to splurge on it, but this blog is serving the same purpose for right now.

Do I really have to say anything about this? I think not.

The Waiting Game

I'm not really a patient person. It's funny because Bud just called as I type and said that I am sooo impatient (aside: I changed "dear husband" to Bud because it's way easier and less lame, thanks!). I definitely DO NOT like to wait in many every day life scenarios - on the phone, on the line at any retail establishment - do not even get me started on TJ Maxx, or the bathroom. I guess that's the hostile New Yorker in me.

The airport is even worse for me. Although I love to get up and get my trip underway, I'm not a fan of waiting at the kiosk to check in, waiting at the security check, waiting to put my shoes on after I've gone through security, and waiting to get my last fix of Starbucks before a flight, etc., etc., etc....

Then the end-all-be-all of waiting - waiting to board my flight.

This wait is the most exhaustive part of traveling for me - I'm exhausted just writing about it. Forget it if the flight is delayed - your 1-3 hour regular wait just turned into a 5 hour nightmare. The only saving grace to waiting is if you are waiting in an entertaining airport with interesting shops and food options - or if you have a smart phone, a laptop, and wifi.

Here's a few things that I like to keep busy with, especially if you are traveling solo:

-People watch - people do the wackiest stuff when they don't think you are looking
-Find a gift shop and play with every toy that makes noise
-Tune out the world and listen to some music and read
-Pace the terminal and search for a tabloid that doesn't contain any headline about any of the Kardashians (this might kill a lot of time)
-Talk to your fellow travelers (there's always an interesting comraderie that develops when you are en route)

Any suggestions for a waiting-hater?

I like lists....

I like making lists. I like it when life fits into boxes and when I categorize things. Easier said than done though, right? I have lists for work, grocery lists, lists of things to do, etc. I also LOVE to cross things off these lists. I was talking to my friend, Navigating Nancy, about this the other day. She mentioned that one of the things on her "lists" is to try to travel SOMEWHERE out of state, for at least one day, once a month.

This brings me to my travel "bucket list".

I don't think I need to explain what a bucket list is. I think Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson did a stellar job of that a few years ago.....

My travel "bucket list" is more of a list of things I want to do/places I want to go, before let's just say I can't do it for whatever reason (think of a mash-up of "The Buried Life" and "World of Jenks"). You know - when life pelts you with lemons and you are forced to make lemonade to survive (*shudder* I can't believe I just used that phrase).

I've given some thought about my list - and continually keep adding. Maybe I should change it to travel "wish list" but, I don't think that packs as much of a punch. I'm a dreamer and a planner - so this is one of my favorite lists! Hey, on my list of "things to do" was to start a blog, and I did that!

I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to visit every Disney theme park in the world???

Here's a short list of mine, in order of some kind of importance (I plan on creating a page in a little bit):

1) Visit every Disney theme park in the world - I only have 3 more to go!

2) Visit every state in the US - I'm about half way there.

3) Visit every continent in the world.

4) Visit every "Wonder of the World" - natural and man made wonder - I can cross two off the list!

5) Visit the Sydney Opera House.

A Picture Says A Thousand Words....

So me and DH are not exactly the best photographers, and we are definitely not the most photogenic. Over the past few years we've mostly relied on pics of our travels from friends and family. I know, soooo lame. So my next resolve is to get a good dig (digital camera) and actually take some pictures. I'm going to not bore you guys with my commentary; well maybe some commentary. I'll let the pictures do the talking....Here are some of my favorite places..

Chichen Itza, Mexico - crazy right? Unfortunately the government's preservation society does not allow you to climb those steps anymore. I'm so happy that I got to when I visited in 2004. It's quite a trip!

Tulum, Mexico, a few hours from Cancun, Mexico - you know, historical stuff...

This is the beach in Cancun outside of the Hilton in Cancun, but it represents my love for beaches worldwide! I miss you sand and sun!

This is the Statue of the Christ in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. It's really an amazing man made structure. The picture on the left is the view from the top. You can see Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance.

Paraty, Brazil, was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. It's a small fishing village off the coast of Brazil. Here we went snorkeling, which was the best snorkeling experience I ever had. Although I was wearing one of those patches for motion sickness (we were on a cruise) and kind of couldn't swim. It was, well, an awkward experience LOL. Shout out to JM for not letting us drown!

And last but certainly not least, and it's always the first place on my list of places to go - Disney World. Sorry, no pictures of Cinderella's Castle - next time! Fun Fact: I have visited Disney World in Florida - wait for it - 25 times. It's sad, but true LOL. Sorry Mom & Dad, you created a Disney monster!

Taking Off

Wow! My first blog post. This is exciting (for me at least, I'm not sure about the rest of the blogosphere). So, a little bit about how this blog came to fruition.

I was blessed in the fact that my family (parents and little sister) traveled at least a couple times per year. We toured the country visiting family and friends mostly within the US. Of course, there was always the yearly homage to Disney World - I'll get into my mild obsession with Disney Parks in another post....

Back in 2004 I met my dear husband (we will refer to him as DH) and in 2006 we sealed the deal on seeing the world together. I'll give him a quick "shout out" here since he always has to deal with me trying to figure out SOME way to get out of New York for a little bit. Hey, it does get cold up here!

If I could eat, sleep, and live traveling, I would. I love the early morning wake-ups for the airport, the feel of the first night of sleep or lack thereof in the hotel, and disappearing from your every day life for what seems like a year, even if it's only for a few days. I like not wearing a watch, and being so immersed in your travel that you forget what day it is.

Unfortunately there a few things like a mortgage, a full time job, and personal commitments that keep me in NY for most of the year. Travel Channel, if you are out there, my resume is totally ready and waiting!

For those of you who don't know me, I also am, well, clumsy and, well, if you couldn't tell by the title of this blog - awkward. A lot the situations I get myself into are entertaining to say the least, and I always handle them with the utmost awkwardness....I like to think of it more as an endearing quality than an embarrassing one, or at least I hope it is.
